Aux Etats-Unis, Verizon poursuit l’expansion de son réseau quatrième génération (4G) sous la norme Long-Term Evolution (LTE).
D’ici la fin de l’année, 38 grandes villes seront couvertes, dont New York, Los Angeles et la Silicon Valley.
On y trouve également d’autres pôles industriels technoplogiques comme Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Minneapolis and Austin.
Selon l’opérateur, cette extension 4G devrait servir à couvrir un bassin global de 110 millions d’américain résidant dans les plus grandes zones urbaines du pays (un tiers de la population globale avec ce premier pan de déploiement). .
En complément, Verizon compte déployer des antennes-relais LTE dans une soixantaine d’aéroports à travers les Etats-Unis. L’opérateur compte déployer une insfrastructure LTE couvrant l’ensemble du pays. Mais sans préciser d’échéance.
« Dans notre vision, nous sommes guidés par notre volonté de fournir un haut débit mobile dans le sens de l’ubiquité pour les Amériains vivant en zones urbaines et rurales », déclare Lowell McAdam, P-DG de Verizon.
En février 2009, l’opérateur avait choisi l’ensemble des fournisseurs de solutions réseaux qui entreraient dans la boucle du déploiement LTE : on y trouve Ericsson, Nokia-Siemens, Starent et Alcatel-Lucent.
Selon une récente étude du marché télécoms américain de l’ARCEP, Verizon est devenu le premier opérateur de la téléphonie mobile en 2009 avec 87,7 millions d’abonnés à ses services.
