Dans une interview exclusive sur le Blog Data Center, A.D. Robison, responsable des infrastructures Data Center chez Yahoo, explique comment le groupe Internet conçoit son nouveau data center à Avenches en Suisse, après une période de tergiversation.
C’est fois-ci, le projet a bel et bien été relancé. Ce sera le cinquième centre de données de Yahoo en Europe.
En fait, il s’agit d’une de la transformation d’un bâtiment industriel en centre de données.
L’objectif est clair : « fournir l’espace et la capacité de gérer la croissance future et les nouveaux besoins de l’entreprise ».
Mais la dimension « green IT » semble y jouer un rôle primordial : « Yahoo va profiter d’une situation géographique avantageuse permettant de réduire la consommation d’énergie et d’améliorer ainsi notre empreinte carbone. La production d’électricité en Suisse est à 95% neutre en carbone ».
A.D. Robison justifie la localisation de ce nouveau data center en Suisse. « Outre la position centrale en Europe, il y a diverses raisons économiques pour la sélection d’Avenches comprenant le climat local qui est idéal pour mettre en place un refroidissement de type free-cooling », poursuit le responsable des infrastructures data center chez Yahoo.
« D’autres lieux sont toutefois à l’étude pour la croissance future en Europe. »
Faut pas désespérer, le territoire français aura peut-être une place privilégiée dans les prochaines étapes de Yahoo.
