I agree with you Dag ;)
En effet, c’est payer pour que leur AppStore ne contienne un maximum d’appli qui en valent la peine, et ne pas se retrouver avec un store poubelle qui accepte toutes les applis de piètre qualité, genre Android Market. Pis une appli même simple et gratuite, développée par un indépendant à ses heure perdues peut être plus que rentabilisée par une simple pub.

Everything that is free gets abused. If it had cost €0.0001 to send an e-mail there would have been no spam (today more than 70% of global bandwidth is consumed by it).

If anyone could gain access to this global marketplace completely for free, any piece-of-shit developer with a crappy program would have nothing to lose trying to sell it there. That would hurt the users of the marketplace, the marketplace itself, and in turn the developers that *do* have something of use to offer.

Assuming you are a programmer, $99 is well below one day’s salary. If you aren’t willing to risk that chances are the marketplace as a whole is better off without your offer.

A final point: As far as I know, MS has no plans to close down WM so that the marketplace becomes the *only* source for applications on the platform. So if you think a free marketplace (with free or paid applications) is such a great idea, there is nothing stopping you from simply making one. You might even find yourself making some income from advertisements. And you could charge developers €1 per year to keep an app listed for sale, or whatever price you think is right. Personally, I suspect if you did so your marketplace would attract less serious developers while those who make commercial-grade apps would continue to flock to the official one. $99 is an extremely low price for the market access that it gets you. Millions of people will be using it, and Microsoft will be promoting it actively and integrating it well with devices so it’ll be easy to use. While it’s technically possible to duplicate all this functionality the cost would certainly be a lot higher than one day’s work, so with the price being more like half a day’s salary, why bother?

Y aura jamais de communauté prête a faire des efforts pour des corp comme ca ! Gratuitement en plus ? Vouiiii, et la marmotte qu’est ce qu’elle fait ? Elle te dit :

« changez d’OS, KDE4 est vraiment trèèès réussi ! Venez écrire des plasmoid, c’est juste mille fois plus intéressant… »

@Alexandre H : certes ce n’est pas énorme, mais c’est dommage d’être obligé de payer pour rentrer dans le système.
A la limite, si je livre une appli payante, ca me paraît légitime, il y a quand même toutes les chances pour que les 99$ soient rentabilisés, mais en tant que dév « indépendant », je fais du dév sur mon temps perso, pour mettre à dispo une appli gratuitement, je n’ai pas envie de payer pour proposer une application gratuite.

Dommage, je suis pourtant bien tenté…

@Zobiuk : Développer pour Windows Mobile est gratuit depuis des lustres. Les $99 te permettent de figurer sur le marketplace et de vendre ton application… rien de bien transcendant donc. C’est moins pire qu’Apple par exemple.

Parole de développeur, si on peut pas faire des applis gratuitement pour se faire la main, avant de trouver un client qui amortira les $99, ben c’est mort d’avance !

D’autant que les clients, souvent, ils veulent aussi un accès, donc ça fait au moins $198, donc de moins en moins sûr que ça se fasse !!!
