Orange ne veut plus se contenter d’être un opérateur/FAI associé à un fournisseur de contenus : il souhaite directement plonger dans l’univers des terminaux mobiles en lançant Boston, son propre smartphone à écran tactile multi-touch sous Google Android, selon des informations révélées par Les Echos.
Avec 174,2 millions d’unités vendues en 2009 (23,8% en un an), les smartphones représentent une manne financière et un potentiel de croissance intéressant. En choisissant l’OS open source Android, Orange réduit son coût d’investissement, puisque ce système d’exploitation est utilisable gratuitement par les constructeurs.
Ce qui laisse le champ libre à Orange pour développer ses propres applications et contenus qui seront intégrés à son smartphone, en plus de l’univers des services Google présents nativement, auquel se rattache la plate-forme Android Market.
Le quotidien Les Echos précise qu’Orange a décidé de confier la fabrication de son terminal Boston en marque blanche au constructeur taïwanais Foxconn, qui possède de nombreuses usines en Chine. Ce même Foxconn est déjà chargé de la fabrication de l’iPhone et de plusieurs modèles BlackBerry de RIM.
Grâce à ces choix, le coût de production du smartphone d’Orange est estimé à 120 euros, un prix très intéressant par rapport aux coûts d’autres smartphones, compris entre 250 et 300 euros.
Le terminal Boston devrait être commercialisé à partir de la semaine prochaine dans certains pays européens, comme le Royaume-Uni, l’Espagne, la Pologne et la Roumanie. Aucune date de sortie en France n’est pour l’instant programmée.
Ce smartphone se veut avant tout accessible, pour être sûr de toucher un large éventail de clients. Orange proposera son Boston couplé à un forfait mensuel pour un euro.
