Skype, distributeur du célèbre logiciel de voix sur IP, prépare activement son introduction à la Bourse de New York. Cette société propose également des services de téléphonie fixe ou mobile à prix réduits.
Dans un communiqué de presse Skype a annoncé vouloir ouvrir son capital aux investisseurs particuliers. La société, basée au Luxembourg et créée en 2003, a déposé hier une requête auprès de la SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) pour vendre un nombre, non précisé, d’actions émises en dollars (American deposit shares ou ADS).
Pour le moment aucune date d’introduction n’a été précisée et le cours de l’action de départ n’a pas non plus été évoqué. Mais grâce à cette entrée en bourse, l’éditeur de logiciels de VoIP espère vendre jusqu’à 100 millions de dollars d’actions.
En novembre dernier, Skype était un peu sorti du giron d’eBay, qui l’avait racheté en 2005. Le service de téléphonie par Internet est aujourd’hui majoritairement détenu par un groupe d’investisseurs financiers (Silver Lake, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, Andreessen Horowitz) à hauteur de 56%. 30% de Skype appartient toujours à eBay, tandis que les 14% restants sont revenus aux fondateurs du service de VoIP, Niklas Zennström et Janus Friis.
En entrant en bourse, Skype espère bien faire fructifier son chiffre d’affaires, qui s’est élevé, selon lui, à 406 millions de dollars pour le premier semestre 2010 (soit une hausse de 24% sur un an). Au 30 juin, Skype comptait 560 millions d’inscrits (dont 8,1 millions d’utilisateurs payants).
Ce tournant dans la saga de l’éditeur lui permettrait aussi de recruter de nouveaux utilisateurs qui payent pour accéder à son service de voix sur Internet. Selon Skype, seulement 7% des utilisateurs de ses logiciels de VoIP génèrent la plus grande partie de son chiffre d’affaires…
