Selon le site GigaTweet, le seuil des 20 milliards de « tweets » (messages de 140 caractères au maximum) publiés sur Twitter a été dépassé ce 31 juillet. Le vingt milliardième mini-message a été envoyé sur le site de micro-blogging par un utilisateur japonais ce week-end.
Twitter, créé seulement en août 2006, est véritablement le site de tous les records puisqu’il avait dépassé les 5 milliards « tweets » en octobre 2009, puis les 10 milliards en mars 2010. A ce rythme là, les analystes de Giga Tweet prévoient que le cap des 30 milliards de messages sera dépassé dans environ trois mois.
Les chiffres concernant Twitter, révélés lors de la conférence Chirp dédiée aux développeurs, sont particulièrement éloquents : 300 000 nouveaux comptes Twitter et 50 millions de « tweets » sont créés chaque jour. Actuellement, Twitter revendique 2 milliards de mini-messages publiés par mois et plus de 3 000 « tweets » postés chaque seconde.
