Broadcom, fabricant américain de puces réseaux et infrastructures haut débit et fournisseur de solutions pour les transmissions sans fil (Wi-Fi, 2G, 3G, Bluetooth…), vient d’acquérir Beceem Communications.
Cette société californienne, dont la création remonte à octobre 2003, développent des composants orientés Wimax/4G.
Elle a été soutenue par un pool d’investisseurs comme DoComO Capital, Intel Capital, Samsung Investment ou Sequoia Capital.
Le montant de la transaction s’élèverait à 316 millions de dollars. Le processus de rachat devrait être bouclé d’ici la fin du premier trimestre 2011.
Avec l’acquisition de Beceem, Broadcom affiche ses ambitions dans le développement d’une plate-forme qui supporte le LTE (4G) et le Wimax.
Elle serait embarquée sur les terminaux mobiles (smartphones), les passerelles haut débit san fil, les produits type « mobile computing » mais aussi sur les appareils électroniques grand public (difficile de ne pas songer aux tablettes).
Selon les premiers éléments fournis dans le communiqué de presse, cette technologie de Beceem seait capable de supporter des téléchargements avec des pics à 200 Mbit/s à partir de terminaux mobiles ou nomades.
Il ne fait aucun doute que Broadcom cherche à sufer sur la vague de la 4G (sous la forme d’une association LTE + Wimax).
Selon Global Semiconductor Alliance, 132 opérateurs dans 56 pays sont en train d’investir ou de déployer des réseaux LTE dans le monde.
Alors que, parallèlement, on recense 550 réseaux Wimax dans 148 countries (mais la France n’a pas réellement participé à son essor).
Créée en 1991, la société Broadcom est cotée sur le Nasdaq depuis avril 1998. En 2009, elle affiche un chiffre d’affaires de presque 4,5 milliards de dollars et revendique un effectif global de plus de 8000 employés.
A l’instar d’un Qualcomm, Broadcom dispose également d’un portefeuille dense de brevets essentiellement dans les technologies de diffusionvoix, vidéo, data (4300 aux Etats-Unis, 1 800 à l’étranger).
Logiquement, on retrouve ses principaux clients dans le monde des télécoms : Alcatel-Lucent, Apple, Cisco, Dell, Echostar, HP, LG, Motorola, Netgear, Nintendo, Nokia, Pace et Samsung.
