Sécurité IT : Intel met la main sur l’éditeur McAfee
En rachetant l’éditeur de sécurité IT McAfee pour 7,68 milliards de dollars, Intel compte s’investir sur le marché de la sécurisation des appareils connectés à Internet.
Intel profite de la torpeur de l’été pour annoncer une acquisition de taille : le fondeur de Santa Clara vient en effet de mettre la main sur l’éditeur américain de logiciels de sécurité IT McAfee pour 7,68 milliards de dollars.
Les conseils d’administration des deux entités ont approuvé cette acquisition qui sera finalisée après l’accord des autorités de régulation.
Fondé en 1987 et basé à Santa Clara en Californie, McAfee édite des solutions et des suites de sécurité à destination du grand public et des entreprises. Parmi ses offres phares, citons par exemple McAfee Total Protection, McAfee Antivirus ou McAfee Internet Security.
La firme américaine a affiché un chiffre d’affaires de l’ordre de 2 milliards de dollars en 2009 et compte quelques 6 100 employés dans le monde.
A l’image de HP qui vient de racheter l’éditeur Fortify, Intel ne souhaite pas faire l’impasse sur cet élément fondamental qu’est la sécurité informatique, à l’heure où de plus en plus de terminaux sont connectés à Internet.
« Cette acquisition est compatible avec notre stratégie en matières de logiciels et de services. Elle nous permettra d’apporter une expérience de pointe dans des secteurs en pleine croissance, comme le sans-fil et les terminaux mobiles », explique Renee James, vice-présidente senior et general manager d’Intel.
En mettant la main sur McAfee, Intel veut coupler ses processeurs et ses plates-formes au savoir-faire en matière de sécurité de McAfee sur les appareils connectés sens large : smartphones, Mobile Internet Devices (MID), tablettes numériques, systèmes embarqués, télévisions et autre systèmes industriels.
De son côté, McAfee s’est déjà intéressé de très près au monde de la sécurité IT mobile, en faisant tomber dans son escarcelle en mai dernier Trust Digital et TenCube au début du mois.
